The best way to clean makeup brushes at home

The best way to clean makeup brushes at home

Dirty makeup brushes can be disastrous on your skin. When they stay uncleaned, they can collect old makeup, dirt, dust and oil which can cause a whole heap of problems. Not convinced? Check out this video:

While makeup brushes and sponges might not even be on your cleaning radar, between the higher risk of skin infections, acne breakouts and rashes when using dirty tools, we’d rather not turn our vanity into a breeding ground for nasties! So how do you clean makeup brushes? To prevent growing a few new unwelcome guests on your cheek, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about how to properly clean your brushes at home. Hint-hint, you can clean them with Koh 😉

How often should you clean makeup brushes?

Makeup brushes and sponges should be cleaned pretty regularly. Because they’re directly being used on your face, this will help prevent bacteria and makeup build up which can potentially lead to breakouts (yes, adult acne is real!) and other skin irritations.

Depending on how often you use your brushes, you should probably clean them once a week or once a month. Even if you haven’t touched them in a while, it’s a good idea to give them a light cleaning to remove dust and grime buildup. For specific tools like an eyeshadow or foundation brush, you may consider cleaning it after every use to avoid colour transfers.

How to properly clean your makeup brushes

Got a stack of dirty brushes you’re ready to deep clean? Follow these simple steps:

Step 1
Wet the bristles of the brush with lukewarm water

Step 2
Spray a small amount of Universal Cleaner onto the bristles

Step 3
Using your fingers, gently massage the bristles to remove any dirt and makeup build up

Step 4
Repeat steps 1-3 where necessary until all the makeup is removed. Rinse the bristles under lukewarm water until the water runs clear

Step 5
Gently squeeze the bristles to remove any excess water, being careful not to accidentally pull or stretch them

Step 6
Shape the bristles back into their original form with your fingers and place on a clean, dry towel to air dry. Repeat with any remaining brushes

Step 7 (optional)
Whilst you’re already at your vanity or bathroom mirror, use Universal Cleaner and Universal Cloths to tackle the entire area including surfaces and the mirror

What not to do when cleaning makeup brushes

  • As a precaution, be sure to spot test Universal Cleaner on your brushes. There is a slim chance it can react poorly with a small number of glues so if you have concerns, have a look through any manufacturer’s care instructions if provided
  • Don’t let the brushes dry sitting up right. This can cause water to trickle down to the handles, loosening the glue that holds it together
  • Avoid using heat like a hair blow dryer to dry the bristles. This too can loosen the brush glue
  • Let the bristles dry completely before using your brushes again. This can take overnight

Can I soak makeup brushes in water?

While it’s more than fine to wet the bristles of your brushes, soaking and immersing the entire brush – handle and all – in water is definitely a no-go. Getting the handle of the brush wet can loosen the glue that holds the bristles in place.
