How to clean a bathroom exhaust fan

That little whirring fan works hard sucking up steam and smells—so it deserves a good clean. Here’s how to get it breathing easy again.

What you need

✔ Universal Cleaner
✔ General Cloth
✔ Grout Brush (or an old toothbrush)

Step-by-step guide

Step 1
Spray Universal Cleaner generously over the exhaust fan cover.

Step 2
Let it sit for 2–3 minutes (up to 5 for heavy grime) to do the hard work for you.

Step 3
Wipe clean with your General Cloth.

Step 4
For grooves and hard-to-reach spots, use the Grout Brush or an old toothbrush.

Step 5
Repeat if needed until it’s spotless.

Pro tip

• Give your exhaust fan a quick wipe every month — less build-up now means way less elbow grease later.

Safety first: Always switch off the power at the wall (or circuit breaker) before cleaning; use a stable step stool or ladder — never balance on the edge of the bath or toilet; wear gloves and a mask if the fan is dusty; keep products and damp cloths away from the electrical motor housing (clean only the cover and accessible surfaces); and ensure the fan is completely dry before switching power back on.

Other notes

If the fan cover is yellowing from age or moisture, don’t panic — a quick soak in a warm solution of Universal Cleaner can revive plastic covers. Dry thoroughly before reattaching to avoid trapping moisture.
