How to clean hair and soap scum from drains

Blocked drains are gross — but here’s the truth: no tablet in the world can magically dissolve a hairball fortress. What a clean routine can do? Keep soap scum and grime from building up in the first place, so hair is less likely to stick and clog.

What you need

✔ Loo Tablet or Dishwashing Tablet
✔ A kettle of hot water

Step-by-step guide

Step 1
Remove any visible hair from the drain (sorry, it’s got to be done).

Step 2
For maintenance, drop a Loo Tablet straight into the drain or dissolve a Dishwashing Tablet in hot water and pour it down.

Step 3
Let it break down grime for 30–60 minutes.

Step 4
Flush thoroughly with hot water.

Pro tip

Alternate between Loo Tablets (brilliant at breaking down soap film and freshening) and Dishwashing Tablets (powerful against greasy residue from shampoos and conditioners). Together, they make life harder for clogs to form.

Safety first: Wear gloves when removing hair and debris from drains — soap scum build-up can be unhygienic. Use tools like a drain snake or brush carefully to avoid scratching or damaging pipes. Never mix with bleach or commercial drain cleaners — this can cause dangerous reactions.

Other notes

• If water is already backing up, you’ll need to physically pull the hair out first.

• Use Tablets weekly as a maintenance routine to help stop the problem returning.
