How to clean wool and delicate fabrics

Wool jumpers, silk blouses, and that cashmere scarf — they’re gorgeous, but fragile. Unlike everyday cotton or linen, these fibres need extra TLC. Here’s how to keep them clean without shrinking, stretching, or turning your “favourite” into “firewood.”

What you need

✔ Specialist wool & silk detergent (not Sensitive Laundry Liquid)
✔ Sensitive Laundry Liquid (safe for cotton, linen, bamboo, synthetics, sportswear)
✔ Basin or sink
✔ Clean towel
✔ Laundry bag (for machine-safe delicates)

Step-by-step guide

Step 1
Always check the care label first. If it says “dry clean only,” believe it.

Step 2
For wool and silk: use a specialist detergent. Handwash gently in cold water, rinse, press in a towel, and lay flat to dry.

Step 3
For other natural fibres (cotton, linen, bamboo) or synthetics: wash with Sensitive Laundry Liquid by hand or on the gentle cycle in cold water.

Step 4
Use a laundry bag for delicate garments to prevent twisting.

Step 5
Always air dry — avoid direct sunlight or tumble drying.

Pro tip

Air wool between washes — it’s naturally odour-resistant.

Safety first: Sensitive Laundry Liquid is not suitable for wool or silk. Avoid Universal Cleaner and hot water on delicates — they can cause shrinkage and damage.

Other notes

Store delicates folded, not hung, to prevent stretching.

Even machine-safe garments benefit from the occasional handwash to extend their lifespan.
