Here’s how to actually deep clean your air fryer

If you’ve ever used an air fryer before, you’ll know that it’s basically like every home cook's best friend. It can fry, it can toast, it can bake, it can even boil eggs (right?!) It’s said this mighty appliance can do everything an oven can, but better, faster and without the need for excess oil.

But for those who have invested in an air fryer, you know just how dirty they can get. Between the baked on grease and old bits of food, using a not-so-clean machine can potentially be dangerous to you and your family. So to minimise any potential risks and to get your appliance looking and working at its best, we’ve pulled together this guide on how to deep clean your air fryer.

How often should you clean an air fryer?

Generally speaking, the basket of your air fryer should be cleaned after every use to avoid build-up, while the machine exterior can be wiped down every week or so. This will also prevent any chances of cross-contamination, food smells mingling, or any crumbs from past cooks getting burnt.

To minimise mess, we’ve also seen air fryer basket paper and silicone liners available (kind of like baking paper for an oven tray) to catch crumbs and grease.

If this is the first time cleaning your air fryer in a while, repeat step 5

How do you get grease out of an air fryer?

The easiest way to remove grease from an air fryer is cleaning it as soon as you’re finished using it. Annoying, we know. This prevents build-up which can become difficult to clean later down the track.

When using Dish Liquid in a Foaming Spray Bottle, let it sit on the basket for a couple of minutes to help let it do its thing. For any really stubborn bits, the Dish Brush will do the trick.

Air fryer cleaning hacks

  • Don’t use utensils to try and pick away any bits of food in the tray or basket. This can scratch away the non-stick lining
  • Avoid submerging the basket under water
  • Avoid spraying cleaning products directly onto any electrical appliances, as this can damage the surface and cause it to rust or malfunction
  • Using disinfectants are a no-go as they’re not safe to use on surfaces where you prepare food
  • Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintaining your specific air fryer model!
